Darrell Smith

Darrell Smith is a native Kansan, growing up in Wichita. He attended Friends University on a football scholarship, and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1986. Darrell began his legal career in the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office as an intern while in law school.

Following his graduation from KU, Darrell was Assistant Miami County Attorney. After three years in the Office of the Miami County Attorney, Darrell moved to the Office of the Johnson County District Attorney where he continued to prosecute crime. As an assistant district attorney from 1988 to 1995, his areas of responsibility included: Adult and juvenile prosecutions; domestic battery and traffic cases; and probate cases involving care and treatment of the mentally ill which included coordinating with the Mental Health Center and all police agencies. Throughout his years in the DA’s office, Darrell developed great working relationships with other prosecutors and defense attorneys.

Since 1995, Darrell has been in private practice. Ten years of experience at the prosecutor’s table provided Darrell with a strong grasp of criminal law, juvenile law, and domestic law, but he sought a new challenge. He wanted an active, people-oriented practice, and so he began the Law Office of Darrell Smith. His areas of practice include family law, criminal law cases varying from first-degree murder to municipal court infractions, SRS appeals, child in need of care cases, juvenile matters, probate, and appeals resulting in both reported and unreported decisions. When Darrell isn’t in court he enjoys fine cigars, yard work, and Jimmy Buffett. His office is in Olathe.

Having recently graduated from Kansas State University, Katelyn is well prepared to assist you. Katelyn is committed to helping Darrell advocate for your cause and will address your questions in a thoughtful and timely manner. Katelyn resides in Kansas City, Kansas, with her husband, Zach, and their daughter, Saeda. When she’s not busy at the office, Katelyn enjoys traveling, sports, gardening and reading.
